Austrian's leading bio-dynamic vintner - Michlits family

THE VINEYARD AS A BIOTOPE

Numerous green plants grow between the vines. Meliot, sweet pea, red clover, and wild grasses all offer an environment for beneficial insects and organisms. Deep roots loosen the soil and form the foundation for vital, healthy vines.

Conscientious cultivation encourages organic diversity and the natural biotope in the vineyard. Valuable preconditions for beneficial bacteria and natural wild yeasts on the grapes that come into the cellar and spontaneously begin fermentation ensure straightforward wines with pronounced regional character, natural concentration, and intense bouquet. Regional character is an important matter of concern.

To grow Austrian grape-varieties is one of our main topics. Grüner Veltliner is Austria’s most famous white wine grape, Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent are the red varieties – all indigenous to Austria and are at home in Burgenland.

Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir love the sunny-warm climate of the Burgenland area. It's hot summer days enable the grapes to ripen completely, while the cool nights allow the grapes to rest and the flavors to fully develop. Best maturity, intensive taste, harmonic structure and true to its variety are our top objectives.

BIODYNAMICS

Working Biodynamic is a process. It requires patience and carefulness for many years. The sustainable attitude to our resources is attended by persistent development and evolvement, but also vulnerability because of climate and diseases which can affect an entire harvest.
Healthy soil and harmonious vine metabolism are the central focus of biodynamic viticulture. Wine is the holistic result from soil, climate, and cultivation.

Herbs and minerals used for biodynamic preparations and plant protection include horsetail, yarrow, chamomile, dandelion, and stinging nettle as well as cow horn dung and horn silica.
Vineyard tasks are carried out in cosmic rhythm and biodynamic preparations are employed to promote healthy vine metabolism. Plant extracts and infusions strengthen natural disease and pest resistance.

“Organic cultivation and mentality was never something just handed over to us and after a long period biodynamic cultivation became for us the extra peak.”

ANGUS STEER ON THE TEAM

Angus steer populate the MEINKLANG landscape recently. These good-natured beasts of the steppe are wonderfully adapted to the Pannonian grasslands and are not only an aesthetic addition to the Seewinkel landscape; they also complete an ecological circle.
This is unique in Austrian wine country. Our own cattle herd is the source for nutritious, organic dung for our vineyards.
